East Asia and the Pacific 1980-1993

Summary
The present report summarizes travel and tourism trends in East Asia and the Pacific over the past years together with the first estimates for 1993. The results of travel and tourism activity in the region are also related to the development of tourism worldwide. This gives a better perspective of tourism trends in the countries of the region and makes governments and the operational tourism sector more aware of the importance of travel and tourism as a means of improving the standards of living of the various layers of the population. The practical usefulness of this report is largely contingent on the availability of up-to-date and reliable information on the various aspects of travel and tourism development in the countries. A further objective of this report consists in stimulating the countries of the region to collect information suitable for monitoring and evaluating tourism trends at the national level, and thus facilitate decision-making and the framing of promotion and marketing strategies. The regular communication of these data to WTO will help ensure the preparation of a more comprehensive analysis of travel and tourism development for the benefit of all countries of the region
